Artist's Description: The Western Bluebird is always a treat for me to spot because they are incredibly beautiful. Although common throughout the open areas of the West, I observed this particular bird at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern Oregon where he seemed to compliment the wide variety of bird species. Compositionally, I used a fading afternoon backlight and also accented the colors of the breast by adding orange lichens to the post which ties the composition together. When the painting was finished it needed something extra so I added the barbwire and put a kink in it to give the piece more of a rustic feel.
